Summer of Bugs

Hello, all!

My interwebs have been quite flaky this summer, so I'm just now putting up pictures from May, June and July. It hasn't really been a busy summer, what with being broke and all, but some good things have happened.

Also its been really hot, really rainy, and really buggy. I like to joke that if last summer was the "summer of love" what with living with good friends, having enough money to go around, and running around causing havoc all the time in the best way possible, this summer is defined primarily by the plethora of insects I have to deal with on a regular basis. And I cry a little on the inside...

So the pics here run the gamut from decent to utterly terrible, but the terrible ones are mostly of the apartment and that's just for story telling purposes anyway.

Back in May I managed to find a new awesome apartment to take the place of The Cave where Beardy Man and I were living before. Its a studio loft inside an old church, and has lots of character and is rather full of, predictably, insects.

This picture has nothing to do with any of that.

The front of the church. We live in the back part. Our landlord is a fairly neurotic middle aged man named Irwin, who is at least professional and an improvement from David Copi, my previous creeper of a landlord.

Our door is in the back...its a small porch but at least its ours!

Wont you come in?

No furniture..this was before we filled it up with all our stuff. The "living room" once you open the front door.
I know, I know, these pictures are really boring. But its a virtual tour! See! Right...? That's cool...right? Anyone? taptap...this thing on?

The little kitchen, stairs to the upstairs. Don't judge these awful pics...

Kind of more living space. There's a desk here now..

The loft upstairs.

Haro Rae! Tiny kitchen but it has gas stove and a dishwasher.

Lets go upstairs...

Loft -within-a-loft...

On top of the loft-within-a-loft, looking back. To the left are the laundry room (oh god! The miracle of free laundry! I wash towels like every three days..) and a small office/study that is now The Room Where Shit Goes To Die, aka, storage.

Beardy Man on the porch. I have forbidden him to smoke his pipe inside. He mostly ignores me.

Artsy pic of the door handle. I like this one...

Ah yes, blue skies and sunshine, the promise of unlimited possibility.

Part II: The Flood

This summer we've had all sorts of crazy weather, including several tornado warnings and a flood. Church St. (where we live, in the heart of the student ghetto) flooded so deep I was in up to my waist. Cars were flooded out, rivers running down the streets carrying all sorts of bits and pieces. The hooligans on our street had an impromptu block party, which was a good opportunity to splash people and not get in trouble for it...

The next day I went out, hoping to capture some of the madness on film (ok, in pixels or whatever) but all that remained was our flooded parking lot, lots of sticks where they shouldn't be, rain-trampled plants, and a few puddles.

In the Arb, the water had carved a deep channel in the bark dust path...
You know I'm from Oregon because I call it 'bark dust' rather than 'mulch'. Don't ask me whats going on here...

And the river was fuller than I've ever seen it.

But elsewhere everything looked much the same, just wet.

These made me a little photo-crazy. Apparently the Arb has a Peony Garden, which are the most frothy fluffy beautiful flowers ever. Its like holding a handful of pink feathers. Except damp.

Part III: Summer

Its a million degrees here. Our lovely apartment, as unique and fun as it is, has no air conditioning, so its sort of awful. Actually really awful, but don't tell my apartment that. I think my internal temperature has permanently raised itself ten or twenty degrees. I keep wanting to ask if I can sleep in the cooler at work.

Anyway, enough ranting.
Ive been playing around with rounded corners on some photos..I like the effect but I don't want to use it all the time.

One of the perks about living in Ann Arbor is that I can pop over and see my family fairly often, including my lovely Aunt Mary...

My wily grandfather...

And my very wonderful, silly grandmother. This may be the funniest picture of her ever, since she's saying "Rae-anna! Are you taking my picture?!"

So here's a better picture...

Also Fourth of July came and went. I struggled to make pie. And made pie I did. Also I spilled a rather large amount of pie all over my car...sorry, Soliver...
But- but- I made homemade cherry and blueberry pie. I pitted the cherries with a chopstick. I looked like I had chopped someone up, since there was cherry juice everywhere once I was done.

Remind me never to do that again.

mmm....piiiieeeee...

I also went down to Pittsburgh (mentally points to arm pit) for the wedding of Adam (Beardy Man's manwife) and Andreea, two very lovely people that put up with us for three days and fed us copious amounts of delicious food and drink. I took lots of pictures but I think I need to give them copies before I put them up on the interweb of doom. (i.e. here). It was a great time and I'm seriously considering becoming an insurance agent and moving to Utah.

The chaos that is Art Fair in Ann Arbor starts next week, so if I never post again, just assume I was swallowed up by the black abyss of creative capitalism.

Ill leave you with this interesting photo of sparklers in a mason jar...

I miss you all.

Spring in Ann Arbor

Happy day after Mother's Day...
I didn't get to see my mamma yesterday...since she's still in China. Miss you, Mom...I can't get you flowers or anything but here's some flower pictures.

Instead of hanging out with my own mother, I spent time with another family, came thisclose to royally embarrassing myself (I have a hunch I still did), played a lot of euchre, and fell in a swamp several times. But we wont talk about that here...

(yes, I really did fall in a swamp. Like three or four times.)

Instead, lets talk about how much I love flowering trees....
mmm...flowering trees....

I took a walk in Nichols Arboretum a few weeks ago with the intention of photographing the trees before all the spring flowers were gone...it was a beautiful day, and they didn't disappoint.

Lots of shades of pink and white...

Mmmm..textures.

DVNO...four capital letters printed in gold...
cause details make the girls sweat even more
while they're shaking their belt
no need to ask my name to figure out how cool I am...

just checking to see if you all were paying attention.
Right...flowers...

WHOOOAAA MACRO

I got excited by the glowy green leaves on this aspen and moved on from flowers for a bit...

Mmmm...photosynthesis...

I really liked the patterns here with the planks and the shadows...

Then I found a tulip tree. I can only imagine what all the joggers thought of me, perched in this tree taking photos...I kept running into the same girl jogging with her dog and I have a theory that she thought I was a creeper following her. But as I tell myself everyday, I'm way too cool to care.

Anyway, the flowers were sort of fading but still quite pretty.

The sort of decaying/old ones were actually really interesting...

In a part of the Arb I rarely go in I found this super cool little water cache in the root crook of three trees...

Ill call this 'self portrait in tree pond'

And more flowers...

Wild violets.

Really neat little sprouts with two sets of leaves on each sprout- different shapes and colors occurring naturally.

I really love this picture- I like the freshness of the colors against the rich leaves.

Anyway, that's it so far. My neighbors in the apartment are cooking something that involves grease and I can smell it...mmm...greaaaassee...
I bought frozen toaster waffles today and just now realized that was pointless since I don't have a toaster. Maybe I can cook them in the cast iron skillet? Wish me luck.

More pictures soon...

More Winter Shots- Crystal Mtn+Pinckney

I'm really in no mood to write anything interesting right now...
But I just edited a bunch of pictures, its 3am and I don't have anything else going on, so here you go. Also I'm just so fond of the interwebs I cant stay away.

I find it a little bit hilarious that I'm chronicling my adventures in May when they happened in February, but I guess rather late than never. (Also-Hi Mom!)

sooo.....Some of these are the usual outdoor pretty shots, and the others, in direct contrast, are really awful blurry pics taken up near Traverse City at Crystal Mountain, where Beardy Man and some friends and I went to hang out for a few days, ski a lot, and stuff our faces with food.

The first thing, the boys decided, was that we needed firewood. And they procured said wood. A whole truckload of it.

But wait! There's more!

We can keep some in here...

But in case we run out there's more in the shed...

Crystal Mountain is the closest thing Michigan has to a ski resort, and they have sled dogs where you can take rides...this was not good for me, as I have a fairly serious husky dog obsession.

WANT.

We discovered the excitement of cross country skiing.
Ready....

And they're off!

Good amount of snow for x-c...

Also, we feasted. There's really no other word for what went on...I don't have pictures from every dinner, which included lasagna one night and IPA steamed mussels on the other, because I was too busy stuffing my face.

Instead, here's a picture of Beardy Man wearing suspenders.

Tews and Andrea cooking up a storm...

Quesadillas with poblano peppers, portabello mushrooms and feta cheese...

OMNOMNOM. This isn't my plate. Really, its not...
Good god. Save me from myself...

Anyway, that was a super fun couple of days and I just sort of felt like sharing.

Back to our regularly scheduled programming...

About mid February we took a trip out to Pinckney Rec Area, which is about a 40ish minute drive from A2. It snowed like a beast the whole time, and it was awesome...a thick heavy silent blanket of snow covering everything. I had to stop and take a moment to savor the weight of it all...

We saw maybe two skiers, and a few ice fishermen, otherwise, the place was empty and still.

Snow in mah hayers...

Definitely love this kind of thing...

I know I'm sort of snobby about Oregon being the best place ever, etc etc, but with that in mind its easy to overlook all the awesome stuff in other places. Michigan has its share of beauty and wild moments, you just have to look a little harder. Winter was cold and sort of awful, but at the same time, overwhelmingly beautiful at times.

I'm glad for spring and flowers and sunshine and a chance to let me smelly softshell air out for a while, but I don't know if I'll see another snowy Michigan winter for awhile, and I know I'll miss it once I'm gone.

In other news-moving next week! Also, spring pictures soon! Im being productive! Yay punctuation! I like puppies! I think its time for a popsicle...

THE END...
